Blockchain supply management company, Circularise has launched a project with Porsche along with its leading material suppliers including Borealis, Covestro, and Domo Chemicals. The move intends to enable the traceability of plastics and the use of sustainable materials in Porsche cars and the automobile industry as a whole. Digitizing Materials Involved in Car Manufacturing Process Although the automotive giant, Porsche comes with a large number of suppliers, the company still looks forward to digging more into the materials that go into them. Antoon Versteeg, Project Lead Innovation Research at Porsche, stated: “We need to know more details on the parts and materials being used in our products, which means information on production processes deep down the supply chain, statements of recycled content, and more. With the help of Circularise, as well as with the help of their partners we were able to trace for a number of specific cases plastics from raw material production to the final car.” By digitizing materials involved within a car manufacturing process, Circularise was able to create a digital thread through the whole supply chain to enable traceability of materials, CO2 footprints, water savings, etc. For instance, every material that went into the supply chain was digitized to receive its own digital copy called the digital twin. The digital twin contained information on the material such as its environmental footprint and origin. Circularise Supporting Plastics Traceability within Automotive Industry Meanwhile, the various actors in supply chains simply will not be able to create a digital twin by themselves. An independent third party is needed to verify the material. As the materials are digitized, the parties within a supply chain will be able to update the digital twin. This will help in mimicking the physical supply chain along with the product lifecycle. The move intends to help those involved in a car manufacturing process towards supporting recycling approaches. It can also help consumers to learn more about their automobile origins while empowering for making sustainable choices.
