Twitter hires famed hacker Peiter Zatko, also known as “Mudge” to join its executive team and serve as the Head of Security in the microblogging site. Zatko had previously been a member of hacking think tank L0pht Heavy Industries. He had also been a member of the hacker collective cult of the Dead Cow. Pieter ‘Mudge’ Zatko Joins as Twitter’s Head of Security Zatko apparently will conduct a 45-60 day review of Twitter. He has also been mandated on how the microblogging site handles security in various aspects as reported by Reuters. Zatko tells the publication that he has been hired to focus on information security, site integrity, physical security, platform integrity. All these factors are necessary to prevent manipulation and prevent vulnerabilities in the platform. In 1998, Zatko had testified before a Senate committee about cybersecurity. He briefed the then President of the United States Bill Clinton about DDoS attacks. Zatko recently served as the project manager for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) during 2010. He left DARPA in 2013 to work for Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group. Mudge to Apply Unconventional Methods on Security Zatko even emphasized that he is working on improving public conversations on Twitter and will be implementing through his unconventional methods on security. Zatko further highlights that he appreciates the social network’s openness to his uniqueness in his unconventional methods. One of them being, confusing bad players by manipulating the data that they get from the platform. In July, Twitter suffered a massive attack where attackers hacked prominent personalities on Twitter including Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Uber, Apple, and Kanye West. The attackers then posted from these hacked accounts calling out for Bitcoin donations. The hacker, a 17-year-old from Tampa was eventually arrested for the attack and was previously caught for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Bitcoins.
