Layer X Labs is Developing a Blockchain-Based e-voting Protocol

Tokyo-based Layer X Labs has announced that it is developing an e-voting system based on blockchain technology as part of Japan’s “Smart City” initiative by the city of Tsukuba in a push to enhance digitization. The firm said that the new system will meet all the technical needs of e-based voting including the prevention of double voting, accurate storage of voting content, the privacy of voters, and management of the transaction records. Enhancing e-Voting in Local Governments by Layer X Labs The blockchain-based e-voting system will enable voters to verify their own voting results including providing the cryptographic ability to verify that the recording and aggregation of the blockchain voting were executed accurately. Layer X further explained that the new system will enhance electronic voting within the local government. The company also added that it is currently working towards solving technical problems related to the digital transformation (DX) of various administrative services. The situation of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many countries across the globe to develop a blockchain-based online voting system. Countries such as Russia have already experimented on this while publishing the platform’s source code on it. Similarly, the French community of Verneuil-sur-Seine voted on a community road project using an app based on blockchain technology. Likewise, the Michigan Democratic Party also announced a successful e-voting experiment using the blockchain-based Voatz platform. Blockchain Allows for Better Voting Protocols The current traditional system of voting such as the ballot box voting or electronic voting can lead to severe security threats such as DDoS attacks, polling booth capturing, voting manipulation, malware attacks, etc. It also requires huge amounts of paperwork, human resources, and time, making it both time-consuming and costly. Through blockchain technology, the voting processes can be more secured, transparent, immutable, and reliable. This can lead to a secure and transparent system of voting while allowing for a higher accessibility level with better voting protocols.
