Hackers Leak Sensitive Data of 3.3 Lakh Users of Indian Crypto Exchange BuyUCoin

Sensitive data of over 3.3 lakh users of the Indian cryptocurrency exchange BuyUCoin have been leaked on the dark web by a hacker group called ShinyHunters on January 20. The leaked database contains information such as users’ names, phone numbers, email addresses, KYC, as well as bank details. Additional data leak linked to crypto includes encrypted passwords, user wallet details, order details, and deposit history. It is worth noting that BuyUCoin collects such information from users who trades on the exchange platform for purchasing cryptocurrencies. ShinyHunters Behind the Hacking of BuyUCoin The leak was first brought to notice by independent cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia. He said, “This is a serious hack as key financial, banking and KYC details have been leaked on the Dark Web.” According to Rajaharia, ShinyHunters was behind the leak. He even shared screenshots of the data dump with the paper. Notably, this particular hacker group had previously claimed responsibility for the hackings of Indian companies such as Juspay, Clickindia, Chqbook, and Bigbasket among others. BuyUCoin on the other hand has denied the breach, saying that the company itself conducted routine testing with dummy data in mid-2020. The company even released a statement on the matter, saying: “In the mid of 2020, while conducting a routine testing exercise with dummy data, we faced a ‘Low Impact Security Incident’ in which non-sensitive, dummy data of only 200 entries were impacted. We would like to clarify that not even a single customer was affected during the incident.” BuyUCoin Processed $500M Worth Digital Currency Trades The leaked file is contained in a MongoDB dump, a popular database for modern apps in a 6GB file along with three backup files. Founded in July 2016, BuyUCoin is an Indian cryptocurrency wallet and exchange platform which claims to have processed digital currency trades worth $500 million to date. The platform supports more than 50 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple.
