Users of Ledger are receiving email threats following the hardware manufacturer’s announcement that more than 20,000 of its customers have suffered another data breach. The email begins with the display of the physical address of the leaked Ledger user while being asked for crypto ransom. The extortionist threats that the victims will face horrifying consequences if they fail to pay the amount within 24 hours of receiving the mail. Ledger Suffers Another Data Breach of 20,000 Customers In 2020, hardware manufacturer company Ledger went through a data breach, resulting in more than 1 million email addresses being stolen. The hacking attack made the data publicly available for hackers and scammers across the globe. Consequently, a large number of Ledger users received threatening emails as a result of Ledger’s data breach during June and July of 2020. The data breach included 1,075,382 email addresses from users subscribed to the Ledger newsletter, and personal information, including home addresses of 272,853 hardware wallet orders. The latest email threat comes a day after Ledger announced that more than 20,000 of their customers had suffered another data breach via Shopify, blaming the platform’s support team. In response to these attacks, Ledger stated it would be working with analytics firm Chainalysis and others to keep track of scammers and subsequently be reported to authorities. The hardware wallet company further announced a 10 BTC bounty ($390,000) for information that would lead to the scammers’ arrest. Ledger Users Receiving Threatening Emails The mails came under the names Denni Hornig and Darrin Burlew. The victims were threatened that if they failed to pay the required crypto ransom they would be faced with violent consequences such as leaking the personal details to thieves in that area. Reddit user Crypthomie, based in the UAE posted that his father, a Ledger user, received an email that included his name, home address, and phone number. The email included a demand of 0.3 Bitcoin (BTC) or 10 Ether (ETH), worth roughly $12,000, or he would be faced with physical violence. The scammer includes in another email: “Are you able to imagine all the possible consequences that can occur to you and your loved ones? “I hope you do not ruin every little thing for yourself by making the wrong choice.” F**k sake!
