U.S. Navy Officials Arrested For Selling Private Info of 9000+ People for Cryptocurrency

A married couple, also the former officials of the U.S. Navy, have been arrested and charged for allegedly selling private information of over 9000 people on the dark web in return for cryptocurrencies. As per documents from the court records, the couple misused their positions to access the private information of thousands of people. For instance, they even forged a letter from the commander of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier for the smooth operation of their nefarious scheme. 9000+ Private Information Sold for Digital currencies Worth $160,000 The ex-navy officials were identified as Marquis Hooper and Natasha Chalk. They have been charged for conspiring to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, both being federal offenses. Hooper has previously been a serviceman from 2008-2018 and worked as an information security manager on the Navy’s Seventh Fleet in Japan. Natasha Chalk is a reservist assigned to Naval Air Station Lemoore. The couple received digital currencies worth at least $160,000 from third parties in exchange for reports and other information from a private database of thousands of individuals. The charging records contain an asset forfeiture allegation through which the government will attempt to seize any property derived from proceeds traceable to the alleged fraud spree. U.S. Navy Officials Used Position to Access Private Database According to the complaint, in August 2018, Hooper used his position to access the database for a business, referred to as Company #1. Through the database, the couple allegedly ran thousands of database searches for peoples’ private information, ignoring the fact that the database was for only government purposes. By doing so, they were able to access the records of more than 9,000 people. The couple also used the information for attempting to access the bank accounts of victims. After Company #1 stopped making the database available to them, the couple even went far to forge a fake letter from the Commanding Officer of the USS George Washington to regain database access.
