Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey has launched his own Bitcoin (BTC) node. On Feb. 5, Dorsey posted a screenshot of the Bitcoin node software Bitcoind running on his computer. Nodes are essential in helping to keep the bitcoin network running. This signifies Dorsey is contributing to processing bitcoin transactions and recording them in encrypted blocks of data. Dorsey Runs Bitcoin Node Using M1 Macbook Chip Dorsey tweeted to his 5.2 million followers an image of Dorsey’s laptop in the midst of synchronizing with the Bitcoin blockchain. The synchronization process itself can take weeks depending on the computer and internet speed. Dorsey’s screenshot revealed that he synched upto only 2% of the chain so far. On being asked if he was running the node on a dedicated Raspberry Pi, Dorsey said he had set it up using an M1 Macbook chip. This is the latest in Apple’s line of laptop processors. It’s a high-performance processor, that enables faster applications using less power. In Feb. 2020, the Twitter CEO even launched a bitcoin emoji for the social media that produces the iconic bitcoin logo. Nodes Keep Bitcoin Network Running A Bitcoin node is software running the Bitcoin blockchain that stores every transaction ever made on the Bitcoin network to check whether they are valid transactions. It also enables someone to create transactions while submitting them to the network. Currently, there are 7,300 nodes on the network right now and even more that are hidden. Bitcoin nodes are different from Bitcoin miners as they don’t compete for a share of the block rewards. Rather, each node hosts yet another immutable copy of the blockchain, helping increase overall network security. Recent data reveals that the number of full Bitcoin nodes in operation has fluctuated between 7,000 and 11,000.
