US Charges Three North Korean Hackers over Crypto Attacks and WannaCry ransomware

The Justice Department of the U.S. (DOJ) has recently accused three officials of North Korean military intelligence linked with the infamous Lazarus Group for a campaign of Crypto attacks to willingly steal $1.3 billion in cryptocurrency and fiat currencies from banks and other individuals. The assistant attorney general accursed the North Korean program and WannaCry ransomware. US Justice Department Indicted Three Hackers U.S. Justice Department announced on Wednesday that they have declared charges against three hackers based in North Korea.  John Demers, Assistant Attorney General, faulted the North Korean program and made an announcement stating: “North Korea’s operatives, using keyboards rather than guns, stealing digital wallets of cryptocurrency instead of sacks of cash, are the world’s leading bank robbers.” Demers detailed that the hacking program of North Korea has been a critical source of income for a country widely concealed from the international economy. Apart from that, some sources have also linked the hacking revenue from WannaCry malware and Coincheck exchange with the nuclear weapons program. He said: “The DPRK cyber threat has followed the money and turned its revenue generation sights on the most cutting edge aspects of international finance, including through the theft of cryptocurrency from exchanges and other financial institutions.” Crypto Attacks and WannaCry Ransomware Detailing about the theft, the department informed that the three attackers created cryptocurrency apps that opened backdoors in the systems of their victims. They barged into the companies marketing and trading digital assets. The recently filed case in federal court against one of the three attackers, Park Jin Hyok, is built upon 2018 charges. Four years ago, Park Jin Hyok was charged with the creation and development of WannaCry Ransomware, the hack of Sony Pictures, and a theft from the central bank of Bangladesh summing up to $81 million. Two more hackers namely, Kim II and Jon Chang Hyok, were also added to the 2018 charges, and there were allegations against them that all the three work for the North Korean military intelligence group named The Reconnaissance General Bureau.
