Over the past weekend, Nifty Gateway reported account hacks, where the hackers stole and purchased non-fungible token (NFT) art. Users of the NFT marketplace then alerted the Nifty Gateway about the incident on Twitter. Hackers stole their NFTs and purchases of thousands of dollars were made on their accounts. Succeeding the purchase, hackers resettle the artworks out of the accounts. Nifty Gateway Reported Account Hacks According to the reports, hackers stole and purchased NFT art using the liked credit and credentials. One user mentioned in the Tweet that their account and credit card were used to purchase NFT art worth $20,000. Later the same user claims that over $150,000 worth of art was stolen during the hack. In response to that, Nifty Gateway posted on Twitter that: “We have seen no indication of compromise of the Nifty Gateway platform. The Nifty Gateway team is communicating with a small number of users who appear to have been impacted by an account takeover.” The team further added: “Our analysis is ongoing, but our initial assessment indicates that the impact was limited, none of the impacted accounts had 2FA enabled, and access was obtained via valid account credentials.” Compromised Accounts Lack Two-Factor Authentication As a consequence, the platform asked users to ensure enabling two-factor authentication. The team also warned users about the risks of purchasing NFT art off-platform. Nifty says, “We strongly encourage all Nifty Gateway customers to purchase their NFTs on the official Nifty Gateway marketplace.” This came as the reports of the stolen NFTs traded in transactions on Discord and Twitter. Undoubtedly, expensive NFT sales have not only grabbed the attention of investors but hackers too. Technoking Elon Musk and father of Twitter Jack Dorsey are also attracting bids into millions. The most expensive NFT sold is worth a whopping $69 million. This NFT record happened on the Nifty Gateway’s platform. As a result, hacker’s interest in these profitable items is understandable. Another factor that adds to it is the absence of two-factor authentication on the Nifty Gateway. That gave easier access to the treasure.
